KINGS IN TOUGH BATTLE ALL WEEKEND LONG
The Orillia Kings Moonstone Mechanical Tyke lacrosse team traveled down to Milton this past weekend for their first tournament of the year. Playing hard throughout the weekend they earned themselves a spot into the semifinals.

The Kings took on Cambridge Chiefs in their first game.  Cambridge held tough and kept the Kings to only 1 goal in the first period scored by EJ Hastings.  Orillia answered back with some strong goaltending of their own as Jace Cosco also held the Chiefs to only 1 goal. In the second period the Kings broke the tie with a goal scored by Wyatt Damstedt, assisted by Brody Clarke. Another second period goal scored by Ronin Black saw the Kings up 3-2 going into the third period. Jonah Hall was aggressive on defence causing a lot of turnovers in Orillia’s favour. Not wanting to stop there the Kings cushioned their lead by adding another 6 goals.  Black dominated offensively adding another 4 and Hastings made another great pass to Jaxson Scheffel to finish the game with an 8-2 win.

Game 2 saw the Kings in tough with a strong Centre Wellington Mohawk team.  After chances from both teams throughout the first period the Orillia Kings opened the scoring with 3 minutes left in the first period when Ronin Black put one past the goalie and into the net. The first of a hat trick he earned throughout the game. Max Balkwill used his speed to save a goal by tracking the opposition the length of the floor and then forcing a Center Wellington player to shoot wide.  Transitioning to the offensive end Balkwill caught a pass from Travis Fraser and found the back of the net.  Scheffel also found the back of the net in the third period with Cosco picking up the assist. Martin picked up an assist in the game.  The scoring continued back and forth and ultimately the teams appeared to be even ending in a 5-5 tie.

Saturday the Kings found themselves up against two very strong teams.  Their first game of the day was against the Brampton Excelsior’s.  The kings stuck with Brampton for most of the first period and were tied 2-2 at one point.  Connor Doherty carried the ball into the offensive end well for Orillia.  Brampton’s depth proved to be too much as they handed Orillia a 7-2 loss.  Goal scores were Hayden McLaughlin from Clarke and Black from McLaughlin.

Orillia’s record was strong enough to earn themselves a spot into the semi-finals Saturday night vs. the Toronto Beaches.  Black led Orillia’s scoring picking up 4 goals and an assist.  Xander Spurgeon helped by playing a strong house on defence and Cole Kettley did well at picking up loose balls.  Ultimately, the Beaches strength proved to be too much as Orillia a 10-7 loss.  Other goal scorers for Orillia in the semi-finals were Scheffel, Damstedt and McLaughlin.

Overall it was a good weekend for the young Orillia Kings Moonstone Mechanical tyke team learning a lot about the game of lacrosse. The experience will help them grow for their upcoming tournaments in June and July.
